Fit Your Golf Grips Properly

October 09, 2011 | 1 Comment

Most people do not seem to know how to properly size their club grips, or know if the grips on their current clubs are properly sized. An improperly sized grip contributes to difficulty in squaring the club face at impact, which can result in pulls, pushes, slices and hooks. In other words, you will not be happy when you add up your score at the end of your round.

Measuring the size of your hands is important to ensure that your replacement grips are right for you. A basic rule of thumb is to figure out what your golf glove size is and match your grips accordingly. If you wear a size Medium golf glove, you probably want to stick with a standard-sized grip. People who wear Large or Small gloves will sometimes find standard-sized club grips comfortable and easy to use as well. You might want to go to a golf professional or club fitter for additional advice regarding grip size and your hands.

To check if your existing grips are right for you, hold your club as if you were preparing to swing it. The grip on your clubs is optimal if your middle and ring fingers are lightly pressing against the base of your thumb on your palm. If there is a significant gap between your fingers and your palm, the size of your grips is too large. If your fingers are squeezing into your palm, your grips are too small.

It is also important to get the correct grip core size to fit the outer diameter of your shaft. If you install a grip with a core size that is improper for the size of your shaft, the actual size of your grip will vary from what you expect it to be. If you have an improperly sized grip, you pretty much either have to buy a new one or fix the old one with layers of tape. While this might properly size the grips for you and your club, it will counteract the benefits of your grips, which are supposed to be naturally supple and sticky.

Grip size is an important and often overlooked aspect of the golf club. As they say, "grip it and rip it," right? If your grips are improperly sized or if your hands aren't properly fitting on the club, even by fractions of inches, the outcome of your golf shots can be significantly affected. Don't let such a small, seemingly insignificant detail add strokes to your game! Check your grips today!
