The Real Scoop on PGA Tour Pros

October 19, 2010 | Events | Be the first to comment on this article.

In his fourteen years as a PGA Tour rep, Mike Biviano has met a lot of golfers and seen many of them in moments and situations never caught on camera. When we recently spoke with Mike, we asked him to share some stories and let us know what these guys we follow on TV are really like.

First of all, don’t doubt that Mike has the opportunity to get close with these guys. He considers Rocco Mediate one of his good friends and has shared numerous meals with the pro. "There’s a guy who’s really excelled by having the perfect golf clubs," Mike said, giving Mediate some friendly ribbing from afar. "He doesn’t have to work as hard because his equipment is so good."

One of Mike’s stories (not about Mediate) brings a whole new meaning to caddy shack. According to Mike, a pro he knows once pelted a porta-potty with golf balls while his caddy was inside.

"They’re just a great bunch of guys," Mike says.  Not to mention good enough to actually hit one of those porta-potties.

As you might expect, television coverage doesn't often show the whole picture- we usually only see them once they are on the course. "When you get into the heat of the battle and you see some players get a little frustrated – these guys are competitors and they love to compete and they don’t like to lose," Mike says, explaining the tense moments we see on TV. "This is their job," he says, which explains why they may get so frustrated at times.

But away from those pressure moments, Mike says the pros aren't any different from the rest of us. "They kid around," Mike says. "They all like college football and basketball... but when the tournament starts, it’s game time. Unfortunately we don’t get to see their real selves [on television] ... When they’re working on their game, they’re as friendly as anyone."

For those of us who enjoy rooting for so many of these players, it's great to hear they’re such a friendly group. Of course, we all have our favorites. At PURE Grips, we're quite partial to Matt Jones as you might expect. As Mike says, when you’ve helped provide the players with their equipment, watching them do well is an extraordinary moment.

"It's just a great feeling seeing them succeed on something you’ve done to help them," Mike says.

We couldn’t agree more.
