Why Were Polymer Golf Grips Introduced? To Save Money.

Here’s the ugly truth: Golf grip manufacturers have become lazy and greedy. Back in the day, all grips were made of natural rubber. These days, polymers help grip companies save a buck, but don’t do much to help your score.

Many of the grips from these companies will say that they're "rubber." This is not completely true. Unlike PURE's 100% natural rubber formula, the majority of grips that claim to be rubber are actually rubber mixed with certain types of plastics, cloth and other compounds.

This is a big deal because synthetic grips have a tendency to wear down faster than natural materials. This means you'll have to replace them far more often than rubber grips and you won't be able to depend on them or feel confident in them out on the course.

How did this happen?

Prior to the mid 1990’s, most people played with leather or natural rubber grips. That’s pretty much all there was. Sometime around 1995, a synthetic polymers began to gain major traction in the market. They were cheaper, easier to manipulate and hey…it was “almost as good as rubber.” With visions of dollar signs dancing in their heads, most golf grip makers quietly made the switch to all sorts of cheaper, lower-quality synthetic grips. While head milling and shaft technologies progressed, grip craftsmanship took a step backwards.

A few years ago, we started PURE Grips with the goal of bringing rubber back into the market as a viable option. Yes, the price tag is a tad bit higher at first glance. But when you compare the durability and length of play with synthetics, rubber grips actually end up being a less expensive option.

Ok, but I’m biased because I’m writing for a blog owned by a golf grip company that makes 100% rubber grips, right? Well, I have one way for you to find out whether or not my story holds water. To prove our point, go try to get a 12 month guarantee from a synthetic golf grip maker, which is to say, any grip maker other than PURE grips. You won’t find a lot of guarantees. To find out why we’re so confident in our grips, dig a little deeper.
