The Colored Grips Wes Chose to Put on his Miura Irons

August 16, 2011 | Products | Be the first to comment on this article.

Well, thanks for all the input on selecting grips for my new Miura irons, it was fun to think about all of the potential options and to see the possibilities. View the poll here. Ultimately, I chose the look of the Blue PURE P2 with Pink paint for my Miura irons. But, I had to optimize every club in my bag, here are some photos of the final set.

We are really excited about the pending launch of our PURE grips in Red, Green, Pink and Blue rubber. With these exciting additions to the lineup we are looking for feedback, so drop over to Facebook and tell us which color is most exciting to you. Here are some picture to show the rubber options and a few of the possible paint options too.

So, I have been talking about all this Miura equipment for a few weeks now, but I have not said a lot about how it plays. So, having now played a good 4-5 rounds with it all, I have to offer my sincere praise. I played these irons for one round in Japan with the Miuras, then I got them in the US a couple months later, complete with a new matching 2 and 3 iron built by Yoshitaka. I love the traditional look of the blade, they are truly a stunning sight in the bag. They look even better from above, a thin top line and best of all, no offset to speak of. This might not suit everyone, but for this hooker of the golf ball, it is a great thing. I am still dialing in my iron game with these versions of the Miuraism Tournament Blade, but I am so happy to be hitting a straight ball, and even happier to be able to cut the ball a little bit. This is something I have never been able to say before. The feel of the irons is what I like the best, since that is what matters most. These irons are a really unique combination of feeling a soft buttery impact combined with what feels like explosive launch from the club face. The shot struck on the center of the blade comes off with a beautiful trajectory and feels like a little bit of heaven, not surprising when Mr. Miura has long been said to possess the “Hands of God”.

Since switching to the new irons I have seen a marked improvement in the number of birdies I am making, a result or more than just iron play, but a couple kick-ins here and there has helped. Actually, I have been most pleasantly surprised by the Miura MD390 Driver that I have been playing. As I have said, I have always fought a hook, and this is particularly true with the longer clubs like my driver. This Miura driver is different from anything I have ever played before, I have been a longtime Titleist driver devotee. The head is a little smaller and the face is much taller than I am used to. However, since putting it in play I have quickly forgotten about the cosmetic differences and the Titleist 910 has been relegated to backup status. I am playing a 10.5 degree, head with a Stiff Epic Nano Fuse shaft by Grafalloy, 68 grams. Like the irons, it has changed my ball flight completely. No more hard low and left, I am hitting a high, straight bomb and even hitting a controlled cut when needed. Scary!

Please check back here soon, we will be featuring the Miura Giken company, the Miura family and the story behind the greatest forgings on the planet.

Choosing the Golf Grip Material That’s Right For You

June 02, 2011 | Products | 2 Comments

What are your golf grips really made of?

You’ve probably thought more about the materials in the head or shaft of your golf clubs than your grips. But did you know the grips are the most important component of your golf clubs? In fact, one of the most important factors in determining how durable golf club grips will be, is the materials from which they are made.

There are three main kinds of golf grip materials: cord, rubber and synthetic blends. These materials are sometimes combined so an otherwise smooth rubber golf grip can include cord material or a synthetic blend may include rubber – giving a bit more elasticity without adding too much to the cost of production.

Overly soft rubber golf grips and synthetic grips have traditionally been popular with causal players. This is because these materials are less rough on the hands than cord grips. Cord grips – while popular among those who suffer from sweaty hands or who often play in the rain – have a reputation of “ripping up” a player’s hands.

Many players who choose cord grips wish they could find a more durable golf grip but don’t want to lose the tackiness/wet-weather qualities inherent in their abusive cord grips. Here at PURE Grips, we’ve discovered a proprietary rubber blend that makes for a smooth rubber golf grip capable of remaining tacky in the rain and when hands get sweaty. These rubber golf grips prevent the wear and tear on the hands caused by cord grips but don’t get that slick feeling often experienced with synthetic grips that have lost their top layer of finish due to over-vigorous cleaning or extensive use. In fact, the natural rubber golf grips from PURE so durable that they can be wiped clean with a damp towel without concern that the tackiness or feel will be affected.

You Shouldn’t Need a Perfect Day of Weather for a Great Day of Golf

May 31, 2011 | Products | Be the first to comment on this article.

Weather has been a factor in golf since the first players were trying to see through Scottish fog. While some weather conditions are simply unplayable, you shouldn’t have to wait for a sunny day of 72 degree weather to enjoy a few rounds.

One of the most common weather-related problems is the way temperature and moisture affect a player’s golf grips. Whether it’s a light rain creating wet golf grips or a cold day that’s making the grips feel stiff, a player’s game can suffer when the conditions aren’t optimum.

Wet golf grips change the feel of a club, disturbing concentration and even affecting the muscles you use to hold the club and the way you have to swing to maintain control. Rain, high humidity and sweat are all factors. And if you’re not using all-weather golf grips that are truly all weather, your game might suffer.

Similarly, without highly durable golf grips on your clubs, a drop or rise in temperature can negatively impact your game by causing the grips to harden or soften beyond your comfort level. Many people don’t think about this, but all grips are somewhat fluid and temperature changes can bring the material closer or further from their freezing and melting points. However, not all materials are created equally. Some materials maintain golf grip feel far better than others.

When we at PURE Grips began looking to invent an all-weather golf grip that could handle moisture and temperature variations in ways existing grips couldn’t, we quickly learned that there is no substitute for natural rubber. In fact, the properties of natural rubber make it the only true all-weather golf grip material on the market.

These days, you’ll find a number of multi-material golf grip blends available in the pro shops. Blending rubber with polymers is a popular way to make weather-resistant golf grips. However, these blends do not make for durable golf grips as the non-rubber materials tend to wear out much faster than the rubber components. They also tend to perform less predictably when temperatures change.

To maintain a golf grips’s feel in multiple weather conditions, there’s no substitute for natural rubber. In our next post, we’ll go into more of the benefits of rubber and how it compares to other grip materials.
