In his fourteen years as a PGA Tour rep, Mike Biviano has met a lot of golfers and seen many of them in moments and situations never caught on camera. When we recently spoke with Mike, we asked him to share some stories and let us know what these guys we follow on TV are really like.

First of all, don’t doubt that Mike has the opportunity to get close with these guys. He considers Rocco Mediate one of his good friends and has shared numerous meals with the pro. "There’s a guy who’s really excelled by having the perfect golf clubs," Mike said, giving Mediate some friendly ribbing from afar. "He doesn’t have to work as hard because his equipment is so good."

One of Mike’s stories (not about Mediate) brings a whole new meaning to caddy shack. According to Mike, a pro he knows once pelted a porta-potty with golf balls while his caddy was inside.

"They’re just a great bunch of guys," Mike says.  Not to mention good enough to actually hit one of those porta-potties.

In our recent conversation with PURE Grips PGA Tour rep Mike Biviano, we asked him to describe the ways he's seen technological innovations impact the game of golf. As someone who’s been in the golf equipment industry for nearly thirty years, Mike had some highly educated thoughts. 

First and foremost, Mike says there have been plenty of innovations that have made a difference in performance. "Over the last couple of years the golf ball in general has really improved everybody... what they’re doing with aerodynamics is just amazing."

Also adding to improved play: "When you fit someone properly (right length, lie and shaft to fit their body) you immediately see scores come down."

Of course, the improvements in equipment technology haven’t just affected our play. It’s affected golf course design as well, pushing some of the game’s heralded courses to modify or risk obsolescence.

When PURE Grips chose Mike Biviano to be our PGA Tour rep, we knew we were getting one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry. Mike’s been involved in golf equipment for nearly thirty years, spending his last fourteen working with pros on the tour. Recently, we sat down with Mike to discuss the benefit of new golf technologies and what it’s like to hang around with the pros. 

We hoped Mike would be able to give us some insider knowledge on the secret equipment the PGA Tour pros use to achieve such phenomenal results. But Mike quickly popped the myth that the pros hit the ball further and better because they have stronger lofts than us. "As far as these guys having jacked up clubs, it’s probably weaker than what I’d call the industry standard," Mike says. 

So what’s the difference? "These guys are really good," Mike says. “They are professional athletes ... to say you see a guy hit a nine iron 180 yards, it’s not really anything odd. They’re in the right position. The golf courses are perfect.” And, Mike says, these are guys who know how to get the most out of their equipment. "They understand how to swing the club ... they swing it perfectly."

In regards to the rest of us out here, Mike says, "We just don’t hit the ball as solidly as they do."
